Motorsports NTAwards
Formal celebration of success via an awards ceremony is a relatively new phenomenon in motorsport. Most events have a podium presentation directly after the event has concluded, and clubs usually have an end of season prizegiving. But the concept of all forms of motorsport gathering together is something that only happens in the Territory, with no other equivalent organisation to Motorsports NT existing anywhere in Australia.
The genesis of this came in the late 1980’s, when Wynn’s sponsored a NT Motorsport Person of the year that was awarded on at least five occasions. This peaked in 1991 when speedway champion Warrenne Ekins won the government-organised Northern Territory Sportsperson of the year award, a feat that has not been replicated since.
Other than the concept of awarding Life Membership, there was no other formal recognition of excellence until Motorsports NT began its Volunteer of the Year awards in 2013. In 2019, Motorsports NT and what is now known as Motorsport Australia hosted the first Motor Sport Awards NT at the Mindil Beach Casino Resort. This was replicated in 2020 before Covid intervened and restarted as our own NT Motorsports Awards at Alice Springs in 2023.
