A brief history of motorsport in the NT:
1942 | Darwin Motorcycle Club (DMCC) is formed by a group of competitors who had been racing unofficially in the scrub around Nightcliff. |

1960 | DMCC constructs a flat track circuit at Bagot Park, Darwin |
1962 | DMCC granted a 99-year lease to operate scramble events at Hidden Valley |
1965 | Arunga Park Speedway opens in Alice Springs |
1966 | Bagot Park Speedway opens in Darwin |
1969 | Drag racing begins near Darwin, on a disused World War II airstrip |
1972 | Tennant Creek Speedway opens DMCC’s Inaugural Kamfari is held |
1973 | Nhulunbuy Speedway opens |
1976 | The Finke Desert race is held for the first time |
1978 | North Australian Motorsports Club (NAMSC) is formed, originally as a club for rally enthusiasts |
1979 | DMCC relinquish the lease to Hidden Valley, with the Darwin Motorsports Council formed to bring more forms of motorsport to the venue |
1981 | Bagot Park Speedway closes |
1982 | Northline Speedway opens at Hidden Valley |
1983 | Bitumen Karting Circuit opens at Hidden Valley |
1985 | Hidden Valley Drag Strip opens |
1986 | Hidden Valley 2.7km circuit opens for car competition |
1987 | Alice Springs Karting Club begins racing at Arunga Park First World Solar Challenge from Darwin to Adelaide |
1991 | Hidden Valley circuit approved for motorcycle road racing Speedway’s Warrenne Ekins wins the overall NT Sportsperson of the Year award |
1996 | Katherine Motorsports Club opens its speedway facility |
1998 | Hidden Valley hosts inaugural Supercars Round |
1999 | Twin Mud Racing tracks open at Hidden Valley Campbell Park Motocross facility opens near Palmerston |
2007 | Motorsports NT appointed as the peak body by the NT Government |
2008 | Hidden Valley Quad Racing track opens Alice Springs Inland Dragway opens |
2015 | Acacia Hills Motocross complex opens Inaugural Red Centre Nats held in Alice Springs |
2019 | Hidden Valley Dirt Karting Track opens Motorsports House opens at Hidden Valley |
2023 | NT Motorsports Awards held in current format for the first time |
2025 | MXGP grand final held in Darwin for the first time |
